You’re out with your group of friends and someone announces “Quick! It’s time to BeReal.” Everyone picks up their phone and snaps a picture. Huh? What just happened, you think? Fear not! We’re here to get you up to speed on what exactly this increasingly popular app is, and how you can start to ‘BeReal’.
The basic premise is that all users within the same timezone are prompted at a specific (but different) time every day to take a picture of what they’re doing, regardless of what it is, and share it. No editing, no curated feed, just living in the moment.
BeReal seeks to move away from the toxic expectations of “likes” and “followers” and provides a more casual, laid back and authentic approach to social media. Mmm, so you’re sold! Now how do you get started?
Here’s How to BeReal
First, you will need to download the app via the App Store or the Google Play Store. Once you’ve opened the app, you’ll be prompted to enter your name and phone number and select some contacts to add as friends. Now that your account is sorted, you’ll get a notification when it’s time to BeReal.
Once the notification goes off, you will have 2 minutes to open the app and snap a picture. Your phone will take two photos: one from the rear camera and then one from the front camera. If you’re unhappy with your BeReal you will have the option to retake it – but be warned, your friends can see how many times you’ve retaken your photo. After all, the aim of the app is to BeReal. Once you’ve posted your photo, you’ll be able to view your friend’s BeReal and see what they were doing at that exact moment.
So what happens if you miss the notification? Not to worry, you have the option to Post a Late BeReal. The app will just let your friends know that you’ve posted late. You can also comment on your friend’s BeReals as well as “react” via selfies. It’s a great way to unite your friends and encourage living in the moment!
We hoped this helped – Happy BeReal-ing!
