Ever find yourself conflicted about when to empty your computer’s trash directory? Some people let it pile up until their computer screams for storage space, others religiously empty it daily and some like to find a balance. Enter: a fantastic tool to help keep your Trash folder in check: Bananabin.
Imagine this – when the data in your Trash folder surpasses a certain limit, Bananabin sends out a swarm of animated, buzzing flies around your screen. These pesky critters are a fun reminder that it’s time to take out the trash, and you can even shoo them away with your mouse. Simple yet effective!
Choose Your Trash Threshold
Bananabin lets you configure the trash threshold directly from the app’s icon in the menu bar, with three distinctive modes:
Janitor Mode – Flies appear when your Trash folder exceeds 10MB.
The Recycler – Flies swarm at the 1GB mark.
Garbage Hoarder – The flies come out to play when you’ve accumulated 10GB of trash.
Currently, Bananabin is free to use while it’s in beta. However, one of its developers, Leon Schrijvers, has mentioned that a small, one-time fee will be introduced once the app is officially released.
Mind the Bugs (Not Just the Flies!)
It’s worth noting that Bananabin still has a few bugs to iron out. For example, the flies won’t show up if you’re using an iCloud Trash bin or if your Trash folder is on an external drive. Additionally, the app currently only supports macOS Sonoma, though support for macOS Ventura is in the works.
Permissions Needed
To work its magic, Bananabin requires accessibility and full disk access permissions. Schrijvers explains that these permissions are necessary to read the position of the bin in the dock and to calculate the disk space the bin occupies. Once the trash exceeds the set threshold, the animated flies make their grand entrance.
