If you’re a leftie, you probably know the struggle. Unless you’ve bought yourself a destro watch (good for you), you’ll have to learn to wear your watch on your dominant hand instead of the non-dominant hand.
But fear not, this doesn’t have to be the case with all smartwatches. Apple and Samsung have given lefties the option to flip their screen orientation. In turn, giving users greater control over where the watch’s buttons are and making it easier to use a device worn on the right hand.
Wait a minute, what about the prompt during setup asking me which wrist I will wear my watch on? Unfortunately, this doesn’t refer to screen orientation. Instead, this prompt is meant to help the watch run the correct fitness tracking algorithms.
So you’re a leftie, and you would like to flip your watch, here’s how to do it on the Apple Watch and Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 lineups.
Apple Watch
You can tweak this setting from your phone or directly on the watch itself.
To flip screen orientation using the watch:
- Navigate to the Settings app
- Scroll down and tap General
- Scroll down to Orientation
- Select which wrist you want to wear the watch on
- Select which side you want the digital crown to appear
To flip screen orientation using the iPhone:
- Open the Watch app
- Select the My Watch tab
- Select General and tap Watch Orientation
- Select which wrist you want to wear the watch on
- Select which side you want the digital crown to appear
Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 & Watch 4 Classic
- Navigate to the Settings menu on the watch
- Tap General, then select Orientation
- Choose your Left or Right wrist
- Once you’ve done that, scroll down to Button Position
- Select whether you want the buttons to appear on the left or right
And there you have it, lefties! Hopefully, in the future we’ll see more smartwatches add a customisable screen orientation. When they do, you can count on us for an update so keep your eyes peeled!
