If your phone only charges when the cable is held at a certain angle, keeps disconnecting or refuses to charge altogether, it is easy to assume that the charging port is broken.

That is not always the case.

One of the most common causes of charging problems is dust and lint buildup inside the charging port. Phones spend a lot of time in pockets and bags, where small particles can collect inside the port and prevent the charging cable from connecting properly.

The charging cable itself may also be the problem. Cables can become damaged internally even when they look fine from the outside. Testing another reliable cable and charger is a simple way to rule this out.

Software can also cause charging issues. A frozen process, an outdated operating system, or a temporary software glitch may interfere with how the phone recognises the charger. Restarting the device and checking for updates can sometimes help.

If the phone has been exposed to moisture, it may temporarily prevent charging as a safety measure. Some devices display a moisture warning and will not charge until the port has fully dried.

The charging port itself can also become damaged. Repeated plugging and unplugging, pulling cables at an angle or accidental impact can wear out or damage the internal connector.

Signs that the port may need professional attention include:

  • The charging cable feels loose.
  • Charging starts and stops when you move the cable.
  • The phone does not recognise any charger.
  • The port appears bent or damaged.
  • The phone charges very slowly, even when using a working charger.

Avoid pushing objects into the port or cleaning it with metal tools, as this can cause further damage.
